[영어독학 사이트 추천] 영문기사읽기 - The Time in Plain English #7

영어를 독학으로 공부하고있다면, 영문기사나 에세이를 조금씩 번역해 보는게 정말 많이 도움이 된다고 생각합니다.

하지만 아직 거기까지는 부담스럽다. 난 아직 모르는 게 많다고 하신다면(나처럼..)

기사를 쉬운 단어나 문법으로 풀어쓴 사이트가 있습니다. 

The Time in plain English라는 사이트입니다.

 

이곳에 있는 기사들은 그렇게 길 지도 않아서 딱 하루에 하나정도 읽어보기 좋은데요.

그래서 저도 하루에 하나씩 기사를 번역해보려고 합니다.

 

일본어공부를 해봐서 알지만, 언어공부는 다른거 필요없는 것 같아요. 꾸준히만 하면 된다고 생각합니다.

하지만, 그 "꾸준히" 라는게 제일 어렵다는거..

그래서 크게 잡지 않고 일주일에 3번정도를 목표로 기사를 번역하기로 했습니다.

 

처음에는 모르는 단어는 찾아보고 내 방식대로 해석해보고,

번역본을 보고 틀리거나 어색한 부분은 빨간색으로 고쳐서 다시 해석해보기.

Many women in Scotland are not able to afford sanitary products. A new law ends “period poverty.” The law says that a “reasonable choice of different period products” are to be available. It even says there can be delivery of the products to the people. The new law passed without a single “no” vote.

스코틀랜드에 있는 많은 여성들은 위생용품을 쓸 여력이 없었다. 새로운 법은 "시대적 빈곤"을 끝낸다. 그 법은 "시대별 제춤의 합리적인 선택" 이 가능하게한다. 그리고 사람들에게 제품 배송을 할 수 있다고 말해왔다. 

A leading lawmaker said, “We have shown that this Parliament can be a progressive force for change when we collaborate. Our prize is the opportunity to consign period poverty to history. In these dark times, we can bring light and hope to the world.”

Two years ago, Scotland also made history when it began giving free sanitary products to students at schools and colleges. Wales and England did the same thing.

Another said the new law was “clear that everyone in this chamber agrees that no one in our society should have to suffer the indignity of not having the means to meet their basic needs. Being able to access period products is fundamental to equality and dignity.”

It is not just the cost of products that have been an issue. Other reasons make menstruation a difficult experience for women and girls.

These include poverty and homelessness. Some transgender people also have trouble accessing sanitary products.

A study showed the coronavirus pandemic lockdown made things worse. Almost a third of girls and women age 14 to 21 had problems. They were not able to afford or get sanitary products from closed schools and youth centers.

A lawmaker said, “Our next steps must be ensuring women’s health in general remains high on the political agenda. There is stigma and embarrassment around menstruation.”

The cost of sanitary products is on the minds of some countries. In the  U.S. a few states have ended the taxes on these products.

A United Nations official said that clean water and good sanitation are important. Information is also necessary. A report said girls are more likely to miss school or even drop out if they’re unable to manage their cycle. Sometimes this happens because of teasing or embarrassment over their menstrual periods.
